Data processing:

1. Transaction entered to a computer file that cannot be processed; for example, a customer change-of-address request for which the computer cannot find a record with the old address. In most cases, a person who reviews the rejects can resolve problems the computer could not and can then successfully reenter the transactions for processing.

2. Machine-processed item that cannot be processed, such as a damaged bar coded (see bar code) document that cannot be machine read and is rejected by the scanner.

Manufacturing: incorrectly manufactured item that fails to meet quality control standards or that a retailer will not accept for sale to consumers. Rejects are sometimes sold at discounted rates, particularly if the flaws are minor.
