  1. Having pertinence or relevance; connected or related.
  2. Considered in comparison with something else: the relative quiet of the suburbs.
  3. Dependent on or interconnected with something else; not absolute. See synonyms at dependent.
  4. Grammar. Referring to or qualifying an antecedent, as the pronoun who in the man who was on TV or that in the dictionary that I use.
  5. Music. Having the same key signature. Used of major and minor scales and keys: A minor is the relative minor of C major.

  • r. frequency — the proportion of the total number of observations of a variable which are observations of a particular value.

  • r. population index — a measure of a population based on a sampling technique such as line transects which determine the number of animals in a given ecological niche relative to a period of examination, or other parameter.
  • r. risk — the ratio of the disease incidence rate in animals exposed to an hypothesized cause to the incidence rate in animals not exposed. A measure of association commonly used in epidemiological studies. Called also risk ratio.
