"Open Range" is a 2003 western movie, directed by and starring Kevin Costner. At the time of its release, it had been six years since Costner had directed and starred in the c…ritical and financial flop, "The Postman," and he was in need of a big hit to redress the balance. Luckily, "Open Range" was that hit, helping to wash away painful memories of "The Postman" and the similarly poor "Waterworld." "Open Range" was more in keeping with Costner's earlier directorial success, "Dances with Wolves," which had cleaned up at the Academy Awards and the box office."Open Range" is a western movie that was directed and produced by Kevin Costner. Costner also appeared in a starring role, alongside Robert Duvall. The screenplay was written by Craig Storper, who was adapting the novel "The Open Range Men," by Lauran Paine. The film's budget was $22 million, but it generated a worldwide box office haul of over $68 million. The critics liked the movie, and reviews were generally positive.Robert Duvall plays Boss Spearman, an open range cattleman. Kevin Costner is his hired hand and closest friend, Charley. They want to live peacefully, but when they reach the town of Harmonville, it becomes apparent that violence is brewing. The town is run by Denton Baxter (played by Michael Gambon), who hates open rangers. One of Spearman's other hired hands is beaten up and arrested, and this sets in motion a chain of escalating violence. Eventually, Spearman and Charley are left to fight Baxter and all of his men in an explosive showdown in the streets of the town.Kevin Costner worked on both sides of the camera. This was not the first time that he had directed and starred in a western. He had first done so in his directorial debut, "Dances with Wolves," which won seven Academy Awards and returned $424 million on its $22 million budget. Costner's next two major motion pictures involved teaming up with director Kevin Reynolds, but with very different results. In 1991, they worked on "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," which was another success story; however, in 1995 they worked on "Waterworld," which was a critical flop. Two years later, Costner's career suffered its biggest setback yet, when he directed and starred in the post-apocalyptic western, "The Postman." The film was critically panned and returned an $18 million worldwide box office from a budget of $80 million. "Open Range" was a welcome return to form.Costner surrounded himself with an exceptional cast for "Open Range." His co-star was Robert Duvall, who has had an incredible career dating back to the 1950s. He came to the attention of the Academy in 1972, getting a Supporting Actor nod for playing Tom Hagen in "The Godfather." He was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1979, for his role as Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore in "Apocalypse Now." The villain in "Open Range" is played by Michael Gambon who will be known to "Harry Potter" fans as Professor Dumbledore. Also appearing in the movie was Michael Jeter, who sadly died before the movie was released, and Annette Bening.The movies budget was $22 million, but the worldwide box office was $68 million. This means the film was not as successful as "Dances with Wolves," but it was certainly a return to form for Costner, who had suffered a number of box office failures and was looking for a hit to turn things around. Critics were in general agreement that the movie was good, and the cast was on top form. The brutal, short gunfight sequence at the end of the movie was picked out for being of particular note, especially as it was very realistic compared to the hyper-stylized action sequences that "The Matrix" had popularized. Several prominent publications, including USA Today and Guns & Ammo, say the shootout is one of the best ever committed to film."Open Range" was released in August 2003 to critical praise and a healthy opening weekend box office of $14 million. It became Costner's biggest success story since "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." It was his second attempt at directing and starring in a western, as he had previously made the hugely successful "Dances with Wolves." After watching "Open Range," you can almost forgive Costner for producing "Waterworld" and "The Postman."Kevin Costner was very particular about the locations he wanted to shoot. When he couldn't find a suitable town, he spent over $1 million building one from scratch. $40,000 had to be spent on a road to reach this new town, as it was so far from any inhabited locations. Turkmenistan is a moderately sized desert country in the Middle East just southeast of Azerbaijan. For a long time, Turkmenistan's economy suffered, but in 2003, it began to s…ee an upswing. As a primarily communist country, Turkmenistan has an economy controlled by the state. They heavily subsidize commodities and goods.Turkmenistan's fiscal policy can be likened to "Swiss cheese." While the review and budgetary procedure are sound, they make use of unreliable numbers due to the government's meddling in business activity. In either case, the government of Turkmenistan discusses a budget one month before the beginning of the fiscal year. The President submits this draft to the assembly, called Majlis, for consideration. In 2012, it is estimated that the government spent 26.9 billion U.S. dollars, but only made 26.4 million in revenue.Turkmenistan was part of the U.S.S.R. and as such was privy to various economic packages. In 1991, when the Soviet Union fell, the packages that were mostly based on the stability of the ruble zone fell apart. Inflation was first measured in the tens, hundreds, and thousands of percent. In order to combat rampant inflation the Turkmenistan government created the national currency, the Manat. The current rate stands at one U.S. dollar to two Manats.After the fall of the Soviet Union, fuel and cotton processing have exploded in the country. In the years between 1991 and 2004, around 14 cotton processing plants opened. The construction industry in the country relies on the government for contracts. Gas exports in Turkmenistan were triple their domestic consumption in 2011. This was due to the opening of the Central Asia China pipeline in 2010. Turkmenistan also produces double the barrels of oil a day than it consumes.The government of Turkmenistan claims that is open to free trade with any country in the world. There is an emphasis in 2013 on building stronger foreign economic relationships. In 2013, 73 countries have an economic partnership of some sort or another with Turkmenistan. The country is a party of the Economic Cooperation Council. Turkmenistan mostly exports agricultural raw material in addition to natural gas and oils.There have not been any labor statistics reported publicly by the government of Turkmenistan in 2003. At that point, their labor force consisted of 2.3 million workers. Of that total, 48 percent work in agriculture, 38 percent in services, and 14 percent in industry and construction. Nearly 90 percent of the workers that run businesses in the country can be considered, in a sense, government employees. In an effort to tone down the government's overreaching employment, it began to cut down on government workers. This led to a sharp increase in unemployment in 2003.Turkmenistan's economy is predicted to grow in future years as the state moves to privatize the economy. Through moves that the government made to restrict and demand repayment of pensions, there still appears to be growth. From 2003-2013, Turkmenistan has opened new lines of credit for foreign businesses.
