The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is the world's largest broadcaster. .
Unlike other broadcasters, it is a public service based quasi-autonomous statutory corporat…ion run by the BBC Trust. .
It is funded yearly by a television licence (or licence fee) charged to all UK households which own a television, rather than being underwritten directly by the Government of the United Kingdom. .
Today, it has bases or correspondents in more than 200 countries and, as officially surveyed, is available to more than 274 million households, though also possibly far more individual persons and groups than surveys can gather, and it is the oldest surviving entity of its kind and is more widely known internationally than any other news organization. The BBC's reach is significantly more than CNN's estimated 200 million. ( Full Answer )

The BBC is getting to be an old lady these days, almost 90 years old now. It was created in 1922 by a group of companies who wanted to offer radio broadcasting in the UK. A f…ew years later in 1927, it was changed from private ownership to a national organization, by way of a royal charter, a decree made by the king or queen of Britain. The royal charter provides the BBC with guaranteed funding as well as freedom from government control. in 1929, the BBC began its first ever television broadcast. So, in 2010, the original BBC is 88 years old, the chartered BBC is only 83 years and BBC television is a mere 80 years old. These dates mean that it is not the oldest broadcaster but it is the first broadcaster to broadcast television. ( Full Answer )
BBC World News is shown in my state (North Carolina) on PBS - the Public Broadcasting System, at 11 PM each night. PBS is partly supported by tax money and also by donations -… it is a non-commercial network (unlike ABC, NBC, CBS or Fox), usually affiliated with the public universities in each state. They do not show commercial advertisements for money to finance themselves. There are something like 17 transmitters in my state and its always on local cable. I like the BBC news very much, and find its reporting to be exceptional. Radio broadcasts of BBC News can be received on a radio which receives short wave broadcasts. I do hope BBC survives its current troubles, which it seems to me, though extremely unfortunate, to have little connection to the actual work of the BBC. It would be a great loss if the BBC were to be discontinued. ( Full Answer )
