There are many reasons to visit this area of the city.Canal St. Martin, at about 2.75 miles in length, is an extension of the Seine River. The canal is situated near Parc des Buttes Chaumont, in the northeastern part of Paris. The beginning of Canal St. Martin is a double lock near the Place de Stalingrad. The water body is bordered on one side byQuai de Valmy on one side, and Quai de Jammapes on the other, before widening Bassin de la Villette, the largest man made lake in Paris. The canal ends at the Seine via Port de l'Arsenal, and is spanned by a hydraulic lifting bridge, the Pont Levant de la Rue Crimee along the way.Canal St. Martin was constructed under Napolean's orders, given in 1802. Its purpose was to provide fresh water to the growing populace of Paris, and as a public health precaution, to avoid water borne diseases such as dysentery. A wine tax funded the project, which took 23 years to dig. Port de L'Arsenal and Bassin de la Villette were the two ports serving the canal, which also shipped goods including grain and building supplies to Paris. In the late 1960s, the canal was nearly relegated to being filled in for a highway to be built in its place.The Canal St. Martin neighborhood is a quiet one, bordering the tree lined canal. Frequented by younger adults, the neighborhood is less pricey and busy than other parts of Paris, though still replete with cafes, wine bars, and boutiques. Many artists have moved into the neighborhood, establishing studios and galleries. In the Parc de la Villette area are science and music museums, and here it is a bit busier. There are concerts at various venues as well, and in summer, an open air film festival.The neighborhood of Canal St. Martin features a number of fashion boutiques, as well as book and housewares shops, and those dedicated to art, movies, and jewelry. There are several eateries, including a wood-fired bakery, cafes offering French cuisine, a juice bar, a shop featuring artisanal products from Italy, and a well-known bar with seafood tapas, among other offerings. You can take a canal cruise or visit Hospital St. Louis, dating to 1605, and featuring a quiet interior garden and a chapel.Canal St. Martin is a canal and neighborhood in northeastern Paris, France. No. It is an old Irish name. It seems to have been the name of a Roman Missionary to Britain in ancient times *See the Village in Cardiff, Wales, "St. Fagans", but there is no… suggestion that the modern surname Fagan is derived from this British origin. It seems to be a separate name in Ireland "O Faodhagain", and the anglicised version of this seems to be where the modern name has derived from.
