I used to work in a National American Miss office, so I have the answer! :-) APPLICATION / ACCEPTANCE To be accepted to be in a National American Miss pageant, you… need a "B" or better grade average in school, plus you need to show some quality activities and interests. They do take into account your age. For example, they know that high school senior has access to more opportunities and activities than a middle school student. These things are not "scored" at the event, but they are important for your admission to be in the pageant. Importantly, NAM is proud of bringing a modern empowering approach to pageantry. There is no swimsuit category in their competition, and they do not have a score for "beauty." It is about fun, communication, achievement and being the best you that you can be. So, they do not ask for your measurements, eye color, or any other thing like that. HOW TO APPLY The quickest and easiest way is you can apply online at www.namiss.com, or you can call the pageant office and they will mail you an application. WHEN / WHERE To find out the phone number of the pageant office for your state, as well as the dates and location of your state event, you can click on your state at www.namiss.com/findyourstate HOW TO PREPARE If you are accepted to be in the pageant, they will send you tons of helpful stuff, magazines, tips, newsletters, and e-mails. National American Miss is one of the largest reputable Pageant Organizations in the United States. Their Mission Statement is: The National American Miss Pageant is dedicate…d to celebrating America's greatness and encouraging its future leaders. Each year, the pageant awards thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes to recognize and assist the development of young women nationwide. The National American Miss Pageant is for "Today's Girl and Tomorrow's Leaders." The pageant programs is based on inner beauty, as well as poise, presentation, and offers an "All American Spirit" of fun for family and friends. Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confident, volunteer work, learning new skills, learning good attitudes about competition, and setting and achieving personal goals. The pageant seeks to recognize the accomplishments of each girl while encouraging her to set goals for the future. My daughter was crowned Miss New Jersey Princess Queen in August of 2007. She has made many appearances throughout the state of New Jersey during her reign and has volunteered her time for many good causes. This experience has been one of the best experiences of her life. We went last year and it ends up costing a lot! Once you pay for the sponsor fee ($440), you still have to buy the production t shirt ($40), tickets to the show $20 each, hote…l room for 2 nights, meals, a dress, interview suit and if you want to be competitive-coaching, hair and makeup and professional photos. It contains habitat for 36 threatened or endangered species including the elusive Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee.There is enough to see and do in the Everglades Park in general that a complete vacation could easily be planned around the park, but a great place to start if time is limited is the Royal Palm Visitor Center. Located only 3 ½ miles from the east entrance gate near Homestead, Royal Palm Visitor center and its easily accessible Anhinga Trail offer a great opportunity to view wildlife that frequent the park.There are several guided tours that originate from the Visitor Center each day. Times are variable depending on the time of year, but generally run about once an hour, which means that a tour of some kind is likely to begin during the course of a normal visit. Reservations are not necessary, but anyone wishing to participate can simply meet up at the appropriate time at the benches outside the visitor centerThe point of a guided tour is that it presents an opportunity to learn from an expert that spends a great deal of time in the area. He or she will know the spots where various animals are likely to be and at what times they're likely to be there. They're also a good source to learn more about the specific area, its history, and anything unique that might be of interest.Topics of the tours are also variable and depend on the time of year and animals that are likely to be visible. The problem evidently had at one time escalated to the point that the park service now offers the use of plastic tarps to cover automobiles while parked in the parking lot.Royal Palm Visitor Center is located only 3 ½ miles east of the park entrance nearest the city of Homestead. Visitors entering from Homestead will usually enter the city from the north on Highway 1 and turn right on Florida State Highway 9336 (Main Park Road). The turnoff to the visitor center is on the left.From Miami Airport, it's an easy 50 mile (80 km) trip. Take Highway 826 south to Highway 1, then follow signs to Homestead. In Homestead, follow prominent signs to turn right on Florida State Highway 9336.When time is a limiting factor, it's a good choice to visit the Royal Palm Visitor Center to get a great overview of the flora and fauna living in this unique ecosystem. It's close proximity to the park boundary and to Miami make it a perfect choice when a visitor just wants to have an overview.The main viewing area at the Royal Palm Visitor Center is called Anhinga Trail. The Anhinga - or Snake bird - is a diving bird similar to a cormorant. These birds are unique in that their feathers are not oiled and therefore saturate with water. If you have never been to the National Powwow, there are many reasons why you would want to plan to go this year.The National Powwow is an annual event, which means that it does take place every year. The dates of the Powwow may change, but it always takes place in the summer when it is easy for people to take vacations and travel. The National Powwow takes place at the Verizon Center, which is located at 601 F Street in Washington D.C.There are many people who go to the National Powwow. There are Native Americans who travel from all over the country to attend the event. There are even Native Americans that attend from Canada. This is a popular attraction for tourists as well. You do not have to be a Native American, by any means, to attend this event. You can purchase tickets to the National Powwow on Ticketmaster. Tickets are available for each day, or you can opt to purchase a three day pass so you can attend every day.There is a lot of dancing at the National Powwow. There are competitions that take place, such as the Men and Women's Golden Age competition for those people 55 and over. There is another competition for Men's Fancy Dance, as well as Grass and Traditional, Women's Jingle Dress and Fancy Shawl. Other competitions include Traditional Dance, as well as competitions for teens, juniors and tiny tots. Prizes are given to the top competitors in each category. In total, more than $125,000 in prize money is given away.There are lots of vendors at the National Powwow. In fact, there are more than 40 and the number of vendors increases each year. You will be able to purchase authentic Native American crafts and art. There will also be jewelry for sale as well. It's not a scam, and it's really fun. I'm going to do it this year and am totally looking forward to it. You are judged 30% on your introduction, 30% on your interview (pr…ivate), 30% on formal wear, and 10% on community involvement (just donate a teddy bear or book). There's no swimsuit competition, no excessive makeup, "world peace, or talents (talents are optional). Its just a fun experience with intelligent girls and lots of new opportunities!! The winner in each age group (5 age groups) receives $1,000, a trophy, roses, a crown, and an all-expenses-paid trip to nationals! Plus, the winner of each optional contest (actress, talent, casual wear, photogenic, spokesmodel, etc.) receives $250. So, if you were interested in trying a pageant, this is the perfect one. Most of the girls there are first-timers (like myself), and it's a popular, reputable organization. One more thing:The pageant fee is $440, and you have to buy a gown, interview outfit, and a production number outfit, so you should probably only participate if you are serious about it and dedicated to it. How do you win National American Miss?
The important thing to keep in mind for NAM is that most of the score is based on your ability to communicate. There is no score for beauty, swimsuit or anything like that. My… friend was in it one year and I went to see her do it. Together, the next year we were in it and got help from our teachers at school. It was free, and it really helped. We got help from the Debate Team coach at our school for the required Personal Introduction part, and also for the optional Spokesmodel contest and we both made Top 5. We also went to our school's DECA teacher and she helped us practice for the one-on-one interview. You also fill in a resume for the interview and she helped with that too. Other than that, they mail you a lot of stuff. Read all of it. Also, there are a lot of videos and VLOG's that girls have on Youtube that have been in NAM. That is really helpful.
