RECENTLY OUR world has seen the signs of xenophobia in different countries. We forget that Abraham Lincoln fought against the existence of slavery. Our father of nation Mahatm…a Gandhi tried to abolish the discrimination based on colour of skin in South Africa. Many others like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela have campaigned against racism. The term race, was once commonly used in physical anthropology to denote a division of humankind possessing traits that are transmissible by descent and sufficient to characterise it as a distinct human type On the basis of physical traits, there are three major groups of race known as: Caucasoid (white skinned mostly settled in USA and European countries), Mongoloid (Yellow skinned and mostly settled in India and China)and Negroid (Black skinned mostly settled in USA, Africa and South America). Today the term has little scientific standing, as older methods of differentiation, including hair form and body measurement, have given way to the comparative analysis of DNA and gene frequencies relating to such factors as blood typing, the excretion of amino acids and inherited enzyme deficiencies. As all human populations today are extremely similar genetically, most researchers have abandoned the concept of race for the concept of the Cline, a graded series of differences occurring along a line of environmental or geographical transition. This reflects the recognition that human populations have always been in a state of change, with genes constantly flowing from one gene pool to another, only by physical or ecological boundaries. While relative isolation does preserve genetic differences and allow populations to maximally adapt to climatic and disease factors over long periods of time. Racism is any action, practice, or belief that reflects the racial world-view, the ideology that humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called "races," that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural behavioral features and that some races are innately superior to others. Racism was at the heart of North American slavery and the colonisation and empire-building activities of some western Europeans overseas, especially in the 18th century. The idea of race was invented to magnify the differences between people of European origin in the United States and those of African descent whose ancestors had been brought against their will to function as slaves in the American south. By projecting Africans and their descendants as lesser human beings, the proponents of slavery attempted to justify and maintain this system of exploitation, while portraying the United States as a stronghold and champion of human freedom, with human rights, democratic institutions, unlimited opportunities, and equality. The contradiction between slavery and the ideology of human equality, accompanying a philosophy of human freedom and dignity, seemed to demand the dehumanisation of those enslaved. By the 19th century, racism had matured and the idea spread around the world. The concept differs from ethnology, with the former linked to physical and therefore immutable differences among people. Ethnic identity is acquired and ethnic features are learned forms of behaviour. Race, on the other hand, is a form of identity that is perceived as innate and unalterable. In the last five decades, many conflicts around the world were interpreted in racial terms even though their origins were in the ethnic hostilities that characterised many human societies (e.g., Arabs and Jews, English and Irish). Racism in total, reflects an acceptance of the deepest forms and degrees of divisiveness and carries the implication that differences among groups are so great that they cannot be transcended. Racial issues are still a sensitive subject in the culture of the United States. One aspect of those issues is the subject of Christian racism. Racist organizations like the Ku Klux Klan and the Aryan Nations cause controversy because of their close association with the religion of Christianity. Whether or not Christianity promotes racism in some circles is an open question.Some Christian extremists believe that Christianity is just for white people. In the time of Jesus, people of a different ethnicity, the Samaritans, lived in Palestine. Most Jews of the day believed that Samaritans were less than humans because of their racial makeup. Jesus taught that all people, no matter what race, are "our neighbor." In other words, it doesn't matter what race you may be a member of. People are told to get along in the Bible and leave differences at the door when meeting together.The Roman Empire was about as multiethnic as any society could be. The chief proponent of Christianity in the first century, the Apostle Paul, has been called racist for his views stated in the many letters he wrote to churches of the day. However, Paul constantly counseled the churches to accept one another and to concentrate on similarities and enjoy the diversity. By the middle of the first century, most Christian churches included both Jews and Gentiles and it was necessary for everyone to be kind to one another. In the short letter to his friend Philemon, he entreats his friend to treat his slave, who had become a Christian, as a brother. Paul firmly believed that Christianity could unify everyone. First Corinthians 12:13 states "For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."Some Christians wonder how racism became associated with Christianity. It is possible that it began to be injected into the mix when Empires began to use the church as a vehicle for conquest. Dozens of countries were subjugated "for their own good" by mostly well-meaning people who thought that people would be much better off as Christians. However, it didn't take long before the people they came to "save" became slaves of some kind, and white Christians began to believe they were superior because of race.Although it is not unusual for churches to be racially segregated in the United States, thousands of churches are diverse. Megachurches such as Hillsong and the Brooklyn Tabernacle have dozens of ethnics groups as members and regular attendees. However, small to medium sized churches tend to be less diverse. Churches in the United States are no longer bombed for racial reasons, but history could repeat itself because of hate groups that seem to crop up at times. Diversity within churches is a major issue that needs more attention.Churches in Europe and Africa are generally more racially diverse than those in the United States. Asian churches are often racially segregated. Some large churches in South Africa have black pastors and white members who attend regularly. This would have not been the case even 25 years ago during the time of apartheid. The situation in the rest of the world continues to improve.Christianity and racism have had an unfortunate relationship for several hundred years. Although the controversy continues, religion and racism is less of an issue than it was a few decades ago. There are still avowed racists who claim to be Christians, but the issue is not a Christianity-wide belief. Hatred can be vocal and cause much damage to other well-meaning individuals who want to do what is right.Some Christians wonder how racism became associated with Christianity. Acts ranging from verbal abuse, taunts, fight provocation, prejudice, bullying, violence, until a Racial Holy War. 6. Make battlefield line easier to draw by distinguishing your enemies by their homogeneous appearance. 7. Fill you with fear and prejudice that you get across the street immediately at the sight of someone outside of your race. 8. Sexual impotence since racist sentiments and propagandas instill in some people frustration, hate and self-consciousness that he or she is not worthy enough to choose whomever he or she wants as a mate but be dictated by sets of fascist rules. 9. Inferiority and superiority complex. Feelings like being threatened and downgraded for some while, for others it's unfair because being different and divided are what they're obsessed with. 10. It can make those who behave, speak, think, or act racist against a victim angrier when they are pointed out and called out as racists, much angrier than their victims whom they offend. Because basically they are proud bullies, and can't see anything wrong in bullying. 25. It makes men more and more sleeker and slicker in their glibs, and so subtle in sugarcoating it, in pathetic attempt to make their deep seated racist psyche appear acceptable they even use God and twist scriptures to appeal to religious people in hope as many can be deceived.
