Effects of the September Equinox Weather Patterns and Seasonal Shifts

Seasons shift year after year, according to cycles. While meteorologists plot their calendars according to full months and seasonal weather changes, astronomers base theirs on… the relationship between the movements of the earth and the sun. Fall and spring begin with equinoxes. An equinox occurs when the axis of the earth has no tilt in relation to the position of the sun. The September equinox, also called the Autumnal or Southward equinox, sets in motion the shift into the autumn season.From an astronomical standpoint, the shift from one season to another depends on how the earth and the sun are positioned in relation to each other. Twice a year, at the time of the spring and fall equinoxes, the earth's axis has no tilt in relation to the position of the sun. Translated from Latin, the term equinox means "equal night". At the time of the equinoxes, the sun directly shines on the equator, and day and night hours are equal. The autumnal equinox occurs in late September each year. After the equinox, the earth's axis tilts once again; days become shorter, and nights become longer. From a geographical standpoint, the parts of the world that are farthest from the equator will have greater extremes of change. For instance, at the North Pole, the September equinox marks the beginning of six months of no daylight at all. The South Pole's seasons are the opposite, so it would mark six months of daylight.Meteorological seasons are determined according to shifts in the weather. Meteorologists, or those who study weather patterns, base the seasons on a monthly schedule. Rather than designating the autumnal equinox as the beginning of fall, the meteorological autumn begins on the first of September each year, and extends through October and November. The shift into the winter season begins with the month of December.During the September equinox, the weather is at its most pleasant, neither too hot nor too cold. During the shift, weather conditions are unstable. Extremes can range from very dry to very wet. Depending on location, hurricanes, tornadoes, and strong thunderstorms can pop up. As the earth's axis begins to tilt away from the sun, some rapid weather changes occur. It gets colder in the northern hemisphere and warmer in the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere will experience its first frost and hard freeze. Precipitation shifts from rain to snow.The September equinox marks the shift from summer into winter. As the position of the earth in relation to the sun changes, precipitating changes in weather, plants and animals prepare for the winter months. The growth cycle of plants and trees ends at this time, and they become dormant. This is evidenced by the change of the colors of the leaves and their eventual fall from the trees. Mammals settle down to hibernate for the winter, and also grow heavier coats for warmth. Humans get out winter coats and ready their furnaces or gather wood for heat.The September equinox also has influence on various cultures the world over. In ancient Greece, autumn coincided with the movement of the Goddess Persephone to the underworld to be with her husband, Hades. The Greeks performed rituals for protection and security at this time of year. It was also considered a time of reflection. In the fall in China, they celebrate the harvest with a Mid-Autumn Festival. Pagans celebrate the September equinox with the feast of Mabon, which celebrates the cycles of the sun. Pagan feasts were borrowed by Christians and turned into holy days. September holy days include the Feast of Michael and All Angels.The September equinox marks the beginning of fall each year. Summer ends and the earth begins to prepare for winter. The weather shifts quickly from the hot temperatures of summer, into cooler fall temperatures. After the September equinox, it gets gradually colder until the winter solstice in December. This cycle repeats year after year as the earth follows its course in relation to the sun.Some people believe that at the moment of the September equinox, gravitational pull is at a point where it makes it possible to stand an egg on its end. Science has proven this to be a legend, however. It is questionable that it is possible to do this on any day, but if it can be done, it has no connection to the equinox. (MORE)

September represents the end of summer and beginning of fall. The seasons are in the process of changing and with it the leaves, grass, and flowers. September colors can repre…sent seasons, change, and colors that are less light and pastel and more dark and robust. Below are a couple of September color palettes that may work for various design projects.Nothing says September like the golden colors of leaves. With the colors cranberry, mustard, and copper, that message is upfront and center. They are colors reminded of red apples, rubies, and caramel, all dark and rich colors. Cranberry is a color that could display well as the background of a website, allowing for the use of a lighter font like the mustard color. Copper may be an option as the highlighting of text or the color of a hyperlink on designing a website. If using September colors for a newsletter, mustard or copper will make a background that will pop.With September, comes autumn. With autumn, comes a seasonal favorite in the pumpkin. Orange represents that shot of spicy color here in this palette. The brown could represent the brown of a crust in a pumpkin pie. The purple mutes the palette. This color palette could be the way to go for a greeting card design. Use the orange as a colorful background and the brown or purple as the font or a border.Cranberry and brown are a running theme with September colors. Gray, on the other hand, may not come to mind as much. Gray is a lot like black and white, they almost go with anything. By adding the cool and sleek, gray, this color palette may not be as vibrant, but does bring sophistication to a project. The gray is an ideal backdrop to the alluring cranberry and stable brown.Black creates the dramatic element in this color palette. Brown and yellow represent the leaves and rustic nature of autumn, while black is the backdrop to these seasonal colors. As black is a major staple in design, this could be the opportunity to use it sparingly. Create a layout of a website with the mustard as the background and the brown as the font. Black could be used as a border or accent to whichever color font is chosen.Beige and coral bring a light essence to this color palette. September doesn't have to say autumn, but the end of it. These two colors represent the last bit of summer, while brown introduces September. This palette could be used on wedding invitations. The beige and coral represent the background or border, while brown could be the font color. Using the brown sparingly should give the project the light September feeling, as opposed to a deep in autumn feeling.September colors represent an array of hues and saturation. They range from the dark of black, to the robust of mustard, to the lightest of beige. Each palette represents the different interpretations of September, from the end of summer to the beginning of fall. Cranberry, orange, and mustard are some of the colors that bring out the traditional autumn feeling and each palette of September colors will work for that project that calls for them.If ever in doubt, turn to the color wheel. A color wheel is a tool that will provide each colors polar opposite. The two colors on either side of the wheel, or the complementary color, are guaranteed to look like they belong together.
