To engage in defamation orally; spoken words that tend to damage another's reputation. If defamatory meaning is apparent on the face of the statement, it is said to be slanderous per se. If the defamatory meaning is not self-evident, but arises only from extrinsic facts, the statement is slanderous per quod. See also Libel.
