(1945–61) had a complex history. It was founded in Florence as the independent equivalent of Rinascita . Edited by the archeologist Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli (with Romano Bilenchi and Cesare Luporini as deputies), it drew in idealist intellectuals who joined or allied themselves with the Communist Party (PCI). Internationalist in outlook and eager to tackle general political themes, it came under pressure from Togliatti to treat Italian issues of a purely cultural nature and contribute more actively to the study of Marxism . From 1946to1953 the PCI played a strong supervisory role. After that date the journal was much more independent.
