Č

Č in upper- and lowercase

The grapheme Čč (Latin C with háček) is used in various contexts, usually denoting the voiceless postalveolar affricate consonant [tʃ] not unlike English ch in the word chocolate. It is represented in Unicode as U+010C (uppercase Č) and U+010D (lowercase č).

Contents

Origin

The symbol originates with the 15th century Czech alphabet as introduced by the reforms of Jan Hus. From there, it was adopted into the Belarusian Łacinka alphabet, Croatian alphabet by Ljudevit Gaj in 1830, and it also figures in the Slovak, Slovenian and Bosnian alphabets.

Uses

In Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Montenegrin, Slovenian, Bosnian, Serbian, and Lakota alphabets, as well as the Latin forms of Serbian and Macedonian, it is the fourth letter of the alphabet and represents voiceless postalveolar affricate consonant [tʃ]. It is equivalent to Ч in the Cyrillic alphabet, cz in Polish orthography, or the digraph ch in the Spanish alphabet, and is sometimes used in Ukranian, Belarusian, Russian, and Bulgarian romanisations.

It is the fifth letter of the Northern Sámi alphabet and the Baltic languages Lithuanian and Latvian and also represents [tʃ].

It is also used in phonetic transcription.

Software

Representation in software follows the same rules as the háček.

Unicode

U+010C (uppercase Č - use Alt 268 for input) and U+010D (lowercase č - use Alt 269 for input) create this character. By using the combining character (U+030C) can be placed together with either c or C to generally achieve the same visual result.

TeX/LaTeX

In text the control sequence \v{c} will work. In math mode, $\check{c}$ also works.
