Achille (s) 1. (Gluck: Iphigénie en Aulide). Tenor. Greek hero betrothed to Iphigénie. Defends her against her father, Agamemnon, who is about to sacrifice her. Created (1774) by Joseph Legros.
2. (Tippett: King Priam). Tenor. Greek hero who takes pity on King Priam and returns the body of his eldest son Hector. He is killed by Priam's second son, Paris. Created (1962) by Richard Lewis.
