The Scottish king of Alba Kenneth III is assassinated March 25 at age 32 (approximate) after an 8-year reign while fighting in the Battle of Monzievaird near the Fearn river at Perth; his son Giric is killed as well, and he is succeeded by his assassin, a 50-year-old son of the late Kenneth II who will secure Lothian as part of Scotland and rule until 1034 as Malcolm II (see Battle of Mortlach, 1010).
Navarre's García II (or III) dies after a reign in which he has ruled also as king of Aragon from about 994 to 1000, fighting the Muslim forces of Abu Amir al-Mansur. He is succeeded by his 13-year-old son, who will reign until 1035 as Sancho II Garcés (the Great).
Famine strikes England with even more severity than in the time of hunger that continued from 975 to 976.
