Egypt's Fatimid caliph al-Hakim destroys Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. His successor will rebuild the church by 1048, but Hakim's rash act stirs demands in Europe for a Christian crusade to recover the Holy Land from the "infidels" (see 1095).
