Scotland's 55-year-old king Malcolm II attacks Viking invaders at the Battle of Mortlach near what later will be called the Giant's Chair; the Danes kill Kenneth, thane of the Isles; Dunbar, thane of Laudian; and Graeme, thane of Strathern, but Malcolm ultimately prevails, slaughtering the enemy after throwing the Danish general Enetus from his horse by some accounts and strangling him.

Poetry: The Book of the Kings (The Shah-nama) by the Persian poet Mansur Abul-Quasim Firdawsi (or Ferdowsi [Abu Ol-qasem Mansur]), 75, of Tus, who presents his work to the Afghan sultan Mahmud of Ghazna. He has adapted an earlier prose version that he wrote in his youth (it was mostly a translation of an early history of Persian kings from mythical times to 628) and has given it its final form to create a masterpiece of nearly 60,000 couplets that will endure as the great national epic of Persia.
