Egypt's "mad" Fatimid caliph al-Hakim begins to encourage the teachings of Ismaili missionaries who profess to believe that he is the incarnation of divinity. They include notably one Muhammad ibn Ismail ad-Darazi, from whose name and teachings the Druse (Druze) religion will arise, claiming to supersede Islam. The 32-year-old Hamzah ibn Ali has arrived in Egypt to preach the new faith and becomes a spokesman for the caliph's religious convictions, but so much resistance arises to the new doctrine that Hamzah ibn Ali goes into hiding and will not surface again for 2 years.
