Denmark and England's king Knute (Canute) fights off the kings of Norway and Sweden in their attempt to conquer Denmark. He begins a pilgrimage to Rome.
The Afghan sultan Mahmud of Ghazna returns home from his final military campaign, having reach Somnath on the southern coast of Gujurat and sacked the city along with its famous Hindu temple (see 1008), but although he has been the first to carry Islam into the heart of India he has never imposed his faith on the Indians and continues in fact to have a large contingent of Hindu troops in his army, with Indian officers in command.
Solmization in music (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la . . . ) is introduced by the Benedictine monk Guido Aretino (Guido d'Arezzo), 31, who will be credited with inventing the staff and pioneering the sol-fa system of naming the notes of the scale with the initial syllables of the hemistichs of a hymn composed in honor of St. John the Baptist (ut, re, mi, etc.) (see 1845).
