political events

Normandy's duke Richard the Good dies after a 31-year reign in which he has defeated English and Swedish forces and brought Normandy to the height of her power. He is succeeded by his son, who will reign boldly but unscrupulously until 1035 as Robert I (Robert le Diable).

The Japanese senior regent Michinaga Fujiwara dies at his native Kyoto in December at age 61, having controlled the imperial government since 995 by forcing four different emperors to marry his daughters. Nobleman Tadatsune Taira rebels against the Kyoto regime in an attempt to reestablish his family's domination over the Kanto region northwest of Edo (see 940); the Fujiwara clan hires the 60-year-old samurai Yorinobu Minamoto to quash the uprising (see 1031).

medicine

The Mayan Empire in the Western Hemisphere suffers an epidemic that weakens her people and begins her decline (see medicine, 731).
