Hungary's Stephen I dies at his native Esztergom August 15 age 61 after a momentous 38-year reign that has established the Hungarian state and imposed Roman Catholicism on its people. He is succeeded by his nephew Peter Orseolo, 27, whose father is doge of Venice (but see 1041).
