The German king Heinrich III moves against Hungary's Samuel Aba, who has attacked eastern Bavaria. Now 25 and a childless widower, Heinrich is married November 1 to Agnes of Poitou, 19, the pious daughter of Guillaume V of Aquitaine and Pitou, who will bear him a son in 1050.

Venice elects Domenico Contarini doge. A member of one of the city-state's 12 leading families, Contarini will reign until 1070.

Córdoba's sovereign Abu al-Hazm Jahwar ibn Jahwar dies after a 12-year reign in which he has given the city-state peace and prosperity. His son Abu al-Walid Muhammad ar-Rashid will reign until 1058, using his political wiles to keep Seville's Abbadids out of Córdoba but gradually ceding authority to his vizier Ibn ar-Raqa.
