Magnus I Olafsson dies while on campaign at Skibby, Denmark, October 25 at age 23 (approximate) after 12 years as king of Norway and 5 as king of Denmark. Frustrated in his ambition to claim the English throne, he is succeeded in Norway by his uncle Harald Sigurdsson, a half brother of Norway's late Olaf II. Now 31, Harold will reign until 1066 as Harald III Harderada (Hard Ruler). Magnus is succeeded in Denmark by Sweyn Estridsen, 27, a grandson of Sweyn Forkbeard who will reign until 1074 as Sweyn II but will be at war with Harald III until 1064.

The Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich III restores the duchies of Carinthia, Bavaria, and Swabia.

Hungary's Peter Orseolo is overthrown by his cousin András, who will reign until 1060 as András I.

Pope Clement II convokes the Council of Rome, whose delegates issue decrees against simony, but the pope dies suddenly at Aposella, near Pesaro, in Romagna October 9 while returning from a trip to Germany after a reign of less than 10 months. Supporters of the deposed pope Benedict IX are suspected of having poisoned Pope Clement, but Benedict returns to Rome and tries to resume his throne as rival families in the city engage in a power struggle for control of the papacy (see 1048).
