The Almoravid sultan Abu Bakr in North Africa goes south to put down a tribal rebellion in the desert, giving command of his troops in the Maghrib to his cousin Yusuf ibn Tashufin. The cousin so endears himself to the people that when Abu Bakr returns he gives up not only his power but also his wife to Yusuf, who will found Marrakech in the next year or so and rule until 1106. When Abu Bakr tries to regain power, Yusuf will push him back to the south, where he will remain until his death in 1087.
Pope Nicholas II dies at Florence in late July after a 1½-year reign and is succeeded September 30 by the deacon Anselm who will reign until 1073 as Alexander II.
