The people of Northumbria rebel against Tostig, earl of Northumbria. Enraged by his cruelties, they choose their leader, Merka, to replace him, march south, and are met at Oxford by Tostig's brother Harold Godwine, 2nd earl of Wessex. Edward the Confessor is inclined to oppose the rebels' demands, but Harold grants them, alienating Tostig, who sails for Flanders and moves on to Normandy, where he offers his services to William, duke of Normandy, who is related to his wife, Judith (see 1066).

Castile's Ferdinand I dies after a 32-year reign in which he has made himself king of León and begun the reconquest of Spain from the Moors. Fernando el Magno is succeeded by his son, who will reign until 1072 as Sancho II (el Fuerte).

London's Westminster Abbey opens December 28 and is consecrated after 13 years of construction.

Construction

English king Edward the Confessor has the Abbey of Westminster built, the first monumental work in stone in England and the first Norman-style Romanesque building there (Edward had been raised in Normandy). The Abbey is consecrated on December 28. Rebuilt in Gothic style in 1245 by Henry III, nothing of the original Romanesque church remains today. See also 1037 Construction; 1245 Construction.
