Denmark's Sweyn II (Svend Estridsen) dies April 28 at age 53 (approximate) after a 27-year reign during which he also ruled over Norway for 5 years (1042 to 1047). Five of his sons will succeed to the throne, and the Valdemar dynasty will continue for 300 years.

Japanese courtier Yorimichi Fujiwara dies in late February at Uji, outside his native Kyoto, at age 81, having served as senior regent to three emperors and dominated the government from 1016 to 1068. He has converted a villa at Uji into the Byoda Temple, but his inability to control the countryside has enabled bandits to plunder the imperial palaces at Kyoto, frequent rebellions have resulted in some of the great lords defying efforts collect taxes, imperial revenues have declined, and the disputes that have arisen among members of the Fujiwara clan will hasten the decline of the family's power. It will not regain its influence at court for nearly a century.
Pope Gregory VII (Hildebrand) excommunicates the Norman Robert Guiscard and all married priests.
