England's William I is defeated in battle by France's Philippe I, who supports William's son Robert Curthose against Anglo-Norman pressure.
The Byzantine emperor Michael VII abdicates and is succeeded by a soldier chosen by the Asiatic troops. The new emperor will reign until 1081 as Nicephorus III Botaniates, and while some of the army mutinies, a young general named Alexius Comnenus puts down the insurrections (see 1081).
