Stanislas, bishop of Kraków, excommunicates Poland's Boleslav II (the Bold) after denouncing his excesses. Bishop Stanislas has joined a conspiracy of nobles against the king, who has the prelate murdered May 9 while he is saying mass in his cathedral. Pope Gregory VII excommunicates Boleslav, Polish rebels chase him out of the country, and he flees with his son to Hungary, where he will die in 2 years at age 42. He is succeeded by his indolent 36-year-old brother, who will reign until 1102 as Wladyslaw I Hermann.
Sweden's former king Halsten regains power with his brother Ingold Stinkelsson; they will reign together until 1084.
Newcastle-on-Tyne is founded in England by William the Conqueror to resist the incursions of Scotland's Malcolm III MacDuncan (see coal, 1233).
Bishop Stanislas of Kraków will be canonized in 1253 and become the patron saint of Poland.
