The German king Heinrich IV lays siege to Rome and finally gains entrance after two futile attempts. He fails in his efforts at reconciliation with Pope Gregory VII, who calls on the Norman Robert Guiscard to support him, and he makes a treaty with the Romans, who agree to call a synod that will rule on the dispute between crown and papacy.
Robert Guiscard and his son Bohemond defeat the Byzantine forces of Alexius I Comnenus and take Durazzo, occupying Corfu as well (see 1081). Bohemond and Alexius will be rivals for the next 3 decades (see 1083).
Ramon Berenguer II, count of Barcelona, is murdered in a forest en route to Gerona December 5 at age 29, probably by his twin brother, who will reign alone until 1097 as Berenger Ramon II (see 1076). Nicknamed "el Fratricida" (the Fratricide), he will do battle with Spanish Muslims until 1097 (see 1097).
