Granada and Málaga fall to the Berber forces of the Almoravid sultan Yusuf ibn Tashufin (see 1089; 1091). The Almoravids impose their intolerant, orthodox Islamic faith on their new Andalusian subjects, zealously persecuting Christians, Jews, and other Muslims who do not accept their beliefs.

The Persian hill fortress of Alamut near Kazvin falls to the rebel Ismailite Hasan-e Sabbah and his followers, whose sect will become known as the Assassins (see 1094).
