Bohemia's Vratislav II dies after a 31-year reign, but although he personally was made a king by Heinrich VI in 1086 his successor will rule until 1110 as Duke Bretislav II.

A man disguised as a Sufi murders the Persian vizier Nizam al-Mulk October 14 outside Nehavand as he travels with his court from Isfahan to Baghdad. Dead at age 73 (approximate), the vizier has been the power behind the Sunni Muslim Seljuk Turkish throne for decades. The sultan Malikshah himself dies under suspicious circumstances at age 38 a month later at Baghdad, his wife and grandson soon die as well, and so do men who have played prominent roles in his regime. Seljuk princes and pretenders will battle each other for dominance in the next 13 years, Nizam al-Mulk's relatives will play prominent roles in princely houses for the next 60 years (although only two will have any real ability), but no one will be able to keep the empire from dissolving (see 1094).
The Almoravid sultan Yusuf ibn Tashufin takes over the once independent kingdom of Murcia on the Iberian Peninsula (see 1091; 1093; Murcia, 1144).
