Berber forces under the command of the Almoravid sultan Yusuf ibn Tashufin take Badajoz as they extend their empire across Andalusia, completing their conquest of at least 23 fractious Muslim states there (see 1091; 1094).
Scotland's Malcolm III MacDuncan and his eldest son Edward are entrapped and killed November 13 at a place that will be called Malcolm's Cross. The 62-year-old Malcolm was coerced in 1072 into pledging subservience to the late William the Conqueror but has been laying siege to Alnwick in an invasion of England; his wife, Margaret, dies 4 days later, and he is succeeded after a 35-year reign by his 60-year-old brother Donald Bane (the Fair), who objects to the English influence that has taken root under Malcolm III and his English wife Margaret; Donald will reign until next year as Donald III.
