(b Kyoto, 1602; d Edo [now Tokyo], 1674). Grandson of (5) Kano Eitoku. He was the foremost Kano school painter of the early Edo period (1600-1868), known for a spare, elegant painting style that appealed to the tastes of the Tokugawa military government, throughout whose rule Tan'yu and his followers prevailed as the academic mainstream of official painting.
