Normandy's Robert II Curthose invades England in an effort to take the throne from his younger brother Henry. He has returned from the First Crusade and is bought off in the Treaty of Alton.

Bavaria's duke Azzo d'Este IV dies in Cyprus while returning from the First Crusade to the Holy Land (see 1070). He has established the German line of the Guelphs (Welfs) and is succeeded by another Guelph.

Sicily's Roger I Guiscard dies at Mileto in Calabria June 22 at age 70 and is succeeded by his 5-year-old son, who will begin his reign in 1112 and rule until his death in 1154 as Roger II.

China's Northern Song (Sung) dynasty emperor Huizong (Hui Tsung) ascends the throne at age 9 to begin a 25-year reign.
