England's Henry I makes peace with France's Louis VI, but his only legitimate son, William the Aetheling, is drowned November 25 at age 17 in the disaster of the White Ship off Harfleur soon after embarking for England (only one man survives the wreck, which takes the lives of two royal bastards, several earls and barons, and many members of the royal household).

Measurement of latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes, and seconds is pioneered by the Anglo-Saxon scientist Welcher of Malvern, who in 1092 observed the solar eclipse and tried to calculate the difference in time between England and Italy (see Longitude Act, 1714).

The order of the Knights of the Temple is founded in a house near Jerusalem by Hugh of Pajens to guide and protect pilgrims. Knights Templar will be organized among noblemen of several countries and, with their men-at-arms and chaplains, will take monastic vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to an order that will survive until 1312 (see 1070; 1128).
