Sicily's Roger II gains recognition as duke at Melfi in September from the barons of Naples, Bari, Capua, Salerno, and other cities that have resisted him.
Former Japanese emperor Shirakawa dies at his native Kyoto July 24 at age 76; his grandson Toba becomes the power behind the emperor Sutoku, now 10, who has reigned since 1123 (see 1141).

Construction
Abbé Suger [b. Flanders or St. Denis, France, or Toury, France, c. 1081, d. St. Denis, January 31, 1151] starts construction on the first portion of the Abbey Church of St. Denis (St. Denis, France), which will become the first Gothic church with flying buttresses.
