political events

Ramon Berenguer III, count of Barcelona, dies at Barcelona at age 49 (approximate) after a 34-year reign. He leaves most of his Catalonian territories to his elder son, 18, who will reign until 1162 as Ramon Berenguer IV, continuing the fight against the Almoravid Muslims (see 1137); his younger son inherits Provence and will reign until 1144 as Ramon I of Provence.

science

Persian poet-mathematician-astronomer Omar Khayyam dies at his native Nishapur in Khurasan December 4 at age 83, having gained renown more for his scientific achievements than for his quatrains (rubáiyát). "The Moving Finger writes," he has written, "and, having writ,/ Moves on; nor all your Piety and Wit/ Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line/ Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it" (see Poetry, 1859).

architecture, real estate

Tintern Abbey is founded in Wales by Cistercian monks in the Wye Valley. A larger structure will be erected on the site in the 13th and 14th centuries (see agriculture, 1128; Poetry, 1798).

environment

France outlaws the practice of letting pigs run freely in the streets after an unattended pig has caused the death of Louis VI's son Philippe in a riding accident, but Parisians will continue to throw garbage and trash out of their windows until the 1300s.
