The German king Lothair II arrives at Rome in March with Pope Innocent II and a small army after a 6-month journey across the Alps (see religion, 1130). Accompanied also by Bernard de Clairvaux, he finds St. Peter's in the hands of the antipope Anacletus II, but he is crowned emperor by Innocent II at the Church of the Lateran June 4 and receives as papal fiefs the vast estates of Matilda, marchioness of Tuscany, which he secures for his daughter Gertrude and her husband, Heinrich der Stolze (the Proud) of Bavaria.
The antipope Anacletus II forces Pope Innocent II out of Rome following the departure of Lothair II. Innocent flees to Pisa, where a council convened next year wil excommunicate Anacletus (see politics, 1136).
