Poland's high duke Wladyslaw's younger brothers force him into exile and vie for power in the provinces given them by their late father, Boleslav III (see 1138). One of the brothers succeeds Wladyslaw as Boleslav IV.
Pope Eugene III is forced to leave Rome once again in January as Arnold of Brescia proclaims his Roman republic (see 1145). Eugene issues another bull March 1 repeating his call for a new crusade, will travel to France, and not return to Italy until June 1148.
Eleanor of Aquitaine announces at Vézelay on Easter Sunday that she is turning over her thousands of vassals to the Abbé Bernard of Clairvaux for a Second Crusade (see 1145). Now 24, she vows to lead it herself (see 1147).
