Scotland's David I dies at Carlisle May 24 at age 69 after a 29-year reign and is succeeded by his grandson, 12, who will never marry but will reign until 1165 as Malcolm IV.
Ireland's king of Leinster Dermot Macmurrough abducts the wife of Tiernan O'Ruark, king of Breifne (later Leitrim and Cavan), precipitating a feud that will continue for years (see 1141; 1166).
Henry Plantagenet invades England with a small army, defeats King Stephen (cousin of his mother, Matilda) in a minor engagement at Malmesbury, and establishes headquarters at Wallingford (see 1152). Stephen prepares to besiege Wallingford with a superior army, but barons on both sides intercede to prevent further bloodshed, Stephen's son Eustace dies during the ensuing negotiations, Theobald is reinstated as archbishop of Canterbury, and Stephen is persuaded to recognize Henry as heir to the throne. Stephen's son William is to succeed him as king of Boulogne. Henry withdraws to France following the agreement (see 1154).
Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona conquers Prades and Siurana from the Almoravid Muslims with whom he has been fighting since he inherited his crown in 1131.
Baldwin III takes Ascalon August 19; the last Fatimid stronghold in Palestine falls to the king of Jerusalem (see 1152; 1154).
Japanese samurai Tadamori Taira dies December 2 at age 57 after a career in which he has used his military and diplomatic skills to subdue the pirates menacing commerce on the Inland Sea, expand trade with China, make himself the emperor's personal bodyguard, and make his Taira clan as powerful as any other. He is succeeded by his son Kiyomori, 35, who will build on his father's success (see 1156).
Pope Eugene III dies July 8 after an 8-year reign and is succeeded by the Rome-born bishop of Sabina Corrado Cardinal di Suburra, who will reign until December of next year as Anastasius IV.
Bernard of Clairvaux dies at his Clairvaux monastery a few miles from Dijon August 20 age 63. The Cistercian abbey that he set up at age 25 now has 68 monks and has become notable as a place of learning.
