England's Henry II tries to delimit spiritual and temporal jurisdictions in the Constitutions of Clarendon, written in large part by his councilor Richard de Lucy, who for the past decade has been one of England's two chief justiciars. The archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, has excommunicated a tenant-in-chief who has encroached on Canterbury lands, protected a clerk charged with assaulting a royal officer, and renounced his promise to observe the constitutions. He flees to France in November and persuades Pope Alexander III to condemn the Constitutions.

The former Japanese emperor Sutoku dies in Sanuki Province September 14 at age 45, having lived in exile from the capital at Kyoto since 1156.

The antipope Victor IV dies at Rome in April and is succeeded April 22 by Guido da Crema, who has gained election through the influence of the imperial chancellor and vicar Rainald of Dassel and will reign until his death in 1168 as the antipope Paschal III with support from the Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa.
