England's Henry II receives homage at Tipperary's 200-foot high Caskel Rock from Irish princes who include Donal O'Brien (see 1171). Henry has gone to Ireland in part to avoid the attacks of Pope Alexander III for the assassination of Thomas Becket; he grants Hugh de Lacy the lordship of Meath for providing the services of 50 knights, and when he returns to England in April he leaves de Lacy as constable of Dublin (see 1173).
