After the death of their father Kano Takanobu (1571-1618), (9) Kano Koi instructed Naonobu and Yasunobu in painting. Since Tan'yu had already become an official painter-in-residence (goyo eshi) to the shogunate in Edo (now Tokyo), his brother Naonobu inherited his father's estate.
