Construction
The huge temple of Abu Simbel on the Upper Nile in Egypt is built in honor of Ramses II. Cut out of the living rock, Abu Simbel is sited so that on two days of the year (one in mid-October and the other in mid-February) the sun illuminates the inner sanctuary. The dates are thought to have been chosen to commemorate famous military victories of Ramses II. See also 1365 bce Archaeology.
