Bohemia's Ottakar II invades western Hungary in support of rebels who want to oust the new Hungarian king Stephen (István) V and have kidnapped his 9-year-old son Ladislas, but Stephen routs Ottakar's forces at Mosony (see 1272).

Kublai Khan assumes the dynastic title that he will hold until his death in 1294; now 55, he founds the Yuan (Mongol) dynasty that will rule China until 1368. The Song (Sung) emperors have lost control of northern and western China.

The vacancy that has existed in the papal palace since the death of Clement IV 3 years ago ends with the election September 1 of the Piacenza-born Tedaldo (or Tebaldo) Visconti, 61, who learns of his election at Viterbo while on crusade at St. Jean d'Acre in the Holy Land. A compromise candidate who is not yet a member of the priesthood, his name derives from the word viscount and he will reign until early 1276 as Gregory X.
