The Arpád dynasty that has ruled Hungary since 907 ends with the death of András III after an 11-year reign. The nomadic Magyars have adopted Christianity and accepted an absolute monarchy under the Arpád kings. András defeated the late Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph I, who claimed Hungary for his son Albrecht, but the king has been unable to control the Hungarian magnates and his death begins a civil war that will continue for 7 years (see 1310).
