France's Philippe VI declares England's French territories forfeit, besieges Guienne, and burns Portsmouth as the Hundred Years' War grows more intense (see 1337). England's Edward III invades Flanders with his wife, Philippa of Hainaut, and gains the support of the Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig IV, who recognizes Edward's title to the French crown in the Alliance of Coblenz and names Edward vicar of the Empire.
The Licet juris issued by the diet of Frankfurt declares that the electors are capable of choosing an emperor without papal intervention. The declaration effectively divorces the Holy Roman Empire from the papacy (see 1202; 1356).
Franciscan friar Giovanni dei Marignolli, 49, leaves the papal city of Avignon in December with three other legates on a mission to visit the court of China's young Mongol (Yuan) dynasty emperor Togon-temür at Khanbelig (later Beijing [Peking]; see 1342).
