The Holy Roman Emperor Wenceslas of Bohemia has the ecclesiastic John of Nepomuk, 54, tortured and drowned in the Moldau at Prague March 20 for refusing to reveal the confessions of the empress. John will be canonized in 1729 and will be the patron saint of Bohemia.
