political events

Erik of Pomerania dies at Rügenwalde June 16 at age 77 (approximate), having lost the united thrones of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden through the follies of his autocratic rule, foreign wars, and the oppressive taxes he levied to finance them.

Hungary's Matthias Corvinus challenges the legitimacy of Bohemia's new king George Podiebrad, who is an avowed follower of Jan Hus and hence, technically, a heretic (see 1458; 1463).

Wallachia's Vlad Dracula makes the first reference to Bucharest September 20 in an act confirming the property of some noblemen, but the place has been occupied since prehistoric times (see 1465).

Antoinette de Maignelais leaves the ailing Charles VII to become mistress to François, comte d'Etampes, who will become duke of Brittany. She secretly corresponds with Charles's son Louis the dauphin and supplies him with information that may help him in his intrigues against the king.

exploration, colonization

The realm of an African king named Prester John appears on a map drawn by the Venetian monk Fra Mauro (see Covilhão, 1487).

The city of Jodhpur is founded in northwestern India by the Rajput warrior prince Rao Jodha, who rules part of Rajputana in what later will be Rajasthan. It will serve as the capital of what will become the largest princely state in the region.

education

Concerning the Order and the Method to be Observed in Teaching and Reading the Classical Authors (De ordine docendi et studendi) by Ferrara-born Italian scholar Battista Guarino, 25, son of Guarino da Verona emphasizes enunciation and style. Guarino was appointed professor of rhetoric at Bologna 4 years ago; he favors reading out loud, recommends that Greek and Latin be taught at the same time, and suggests that students be paired off and pitted against each other in order to make each try to outdo the other (see 1460).

art

Painting: The Crucifixion by Italian painter Andrea Mantegna, 28, is part of the main altarpiece triptych at Verona's Church of Saint Zeno. Mantegna next year will becomes court painter to the Gonzaga family at Mantua, where he will remain until his death in 1506.
