political events

Venice goes to war with Constantinople following Ottoman interference with her Levant trade. Hostilities will continue for 16 years.

The Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III unites upper and lower Austria following the death of his brother Albrecht December 12 at age 44 while laying siege to Vienna (see 1462), but Bohemia's George Podiebrad and Hungary's Matthias Corvinus (Mátyás Corvin) ravage the imperial territories (see 1459). Matthias gains suzerainty over Bosnia, and Bohemia's Catholic nobility elects him king, but when he tries to occupy the Bohemian throne the Jagiello dynasty intervenes, George Podiebrad defeats him in battle, and a 10-year struggle begins (see 1466).

agriculture

English landowners gain a monopoly in the home grain market by a statute that prohibits imports of grain except when prices rise to levels at which the export of grain is prohibited. Food prices will rise in the next 2 centuries without compensating wage increases, but almost no grain will be imported (see 1436; 1554).
