Review

The Top 40 success of Frankie Avalon's 1976 disco remake of "Venus" probably inspired this reissue compilation of his earlier hits, circa 1958-1962. Despite the inexpensive packaging, the album is pretty much what it says it is, containing 16 of Avalon's chart hits. And with one exception, they are the 16 biggest ones, including the chart-toppers "Venus" and "Why." The only quibble is that "You Excite Me," which is not included, was a bigger hit than "The Puppet Song," which is. But neither were among Avalon's Top 40 successes, all of which are here. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
