Astronomy
- Galileo Galilei publishes his initial telescopic observations in a short treatise entitled Sidereus Nuncius (Sidereal Messenger). In the same year he discovers Jupiter's four largest satellites (moons): Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
- Johannes Fabricius is the first to observe sunspots by telescope.
- The Orion Nebula is discovered by Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc.

- Jean Beguin publishes Tyrocinium Chymicum, first lecture book about chemistry.
- Tinsel is invented by a German silversmith, who uses real silver for the metal strands.
